Very Scarce Roman Imperatoral - Silver Denarius, Military Mint traveling with Antony in Cisalpine Gaul Issued shortly after Caesar's death, the first issue of Antony under the security of his military camp combines his own portrait with that of Caesar, thereby asserting his leadership of the Caesarian party at a time when he was beginning to feel threatened by Octavian. Doubtless the propaganda was aimed at his soldiers, the loyalty of whom might be suspect now that Caesar's adopted son had become a factor in the political power game. The symbols of the augurate (lituus and capis) appearing behind the heads serve to emphasize the links between Antony and the slain dictator and thus to strengthen his claim to be Caesar's true successor. Antony is depicted unshaven as an indication of mourning. This is the first occurrence of Antony's name on a coin. Obverse: Bare head of Mark Antony right, bearded, lituus behind; M ANTON IMP (NT in monogram) before. Reverse: Wreathed head of Julius Caesar right, capis (jug) behind; CAESAR DIC before. Condition: Choice VF/Good VF. Coin is much, much better than picture. This is a choice example of this coin. The portrait of Mark Antony is exceptional, charismatic, and of medium high relief. Caesar's portrait is very good but not as high relief as Antony's. However, when compared to other Caesar portraits, it is exceptional as well. It has excellent centering for Julius Caesar with decent centering for Mark Antony. It also has a great strike, slightly double struck, which is virtually unnoticeable on Antony and shows at the top of Caesar's head. It is not a major detraction though. The surfaces are quite good, with a few insignificant marks on the obverse and a slightly rough edge on the reverse at 5:30. The coin has excellent metal with a very nice sheen and brownish black toning with lighter silver areas on the high points. This is an exceptional example of this coin. Valuation: Why valuation? The strike, state of preservation, and attractiveness make this a very choice example of this coin. Going through the last 20 CNG and Triton auction catalogs, I only found 4 high grade examples, and they were NOT of the more valuable version, Crawford 488/1, Sear Millennium 1464, which is at auction here. Compare to Triton II, lot 727, where a lightly toned, good VF, with a flat strike on Antony's head was estimated at $1,000 and sold for $1150 + 172.50 = $1,322.50. Lot 727 is centered a bit better, but has a flat strike. It is the less valuable Sear Millennium 1465. Compare to CNG 38, lot 844, where a lightly toned near EF was estimated at $1,000 and sold for $975 + 97.50 = 1072.50. Lot 884 has a flat strike on Antony's head. It is the less valuable Sear Millennium 1465. Compare to Triton III, lot 950, where a toned, near EF, with an unusually good strike was estimated at $1,500 and sold for $2,200 + 330 = $2,530.00. Lot 950 is a nice coin. It is the less valuable Sear Millennium 1465. Compare to CNG 47-1337, where a toned, near EF with a counterstamp on Antony's nose was estimated at $1,750 and sold for $1875 + 187.50 = $2,062.50. Lot 1337 is a nice coin but has the counterstamp on Antony's nose. Although labeled as Crawford 488/1 it is, in fact, the less valuable Crawford 488/2, Sear Millennium 1465. Vagi, Coinage and History of the Roman Empire, values it at $400-600 in F, $700-$1000 in VF, and $1,500-2,000 in EF. In Sear, Roman Coins and their Values, Millennium Edition, the coin is valued at $1,040 in VF and $2,560 in EF. Sear, The History and Coinage of the Imperators 49-27 BC, values it at $2,550 in EF. Compared to the examples, the coin at auction is the only example of Crawford 488/1, Sear Millennium 1464 which is a more valuable version than 488/2, Sear Millennium 1465. All in all, the coin at auction is a no problem coin unlike lots 727 and 844 which have a flat strike on Antony's head or lot 1337 which has a counterstamp on his nose. It also has a good strike like lot 950 which sold for well over estimate at $2,530. The excellent surfaces and choice Antony portrait make this coin an exceptional example of this very scarce issue. Size: 3.65 grams, die axis = 6.5, flan 2.2 mm thick, 18.0 mm in diameter. References: Sydenham 1165, rarity 5; Crawford 488/1; BMCRR Gaul 53; RSC J. Caesar and M.
